Welcome

Subduction is fundamental to the transfer of matter and energy in our planet: subduction processes drive the cycles of water, carbon, rock, and heat on the grandest scale, produce dramatic topography and the planet's largest earthquakes.

The local physiography that surrounds us in the PNW and enriches our lives is directly linked to our subduction setting, but also hosts many natural hazards that will challenge the growth of our society.

The UW is a leader in subduction zone science and associated hazards. Our expertise spans from the ridge to the back arc, and our portfolio of research projects addresses a range of scientific and societal issues.
